Louisiana Waist Belt Plate

On January 26, 1861, Louisiana seceded from the United States. In a convention meeting in Baton Rouge, secession Delegates voted of 113 to 17, to secede from the Union, joining the “Call to Arms” against Tyranny.  This featured “non-excavated” plate, is an example very similar in manufacture as Plate 286 on page 158 in the Civil War Buckle reference “Confederate Belt Buckle & Plates by Steve E. Mullinax, Expanded Edition. This ultra fine condition example measures 55 X 79 mm. Construction: Die-struck rolled brass face, “lead filled” with brass belt hooks soldered directly onto the lead backing. The state of Louisiana manufactured as many as 30 different variants of the Pelican. Provenance: Private Southern Collection.
