Confederate States Armory Field & Staff Sword

$24,500.00

The “Sword Maker for the Confederacy,” Louis Froelich moved his company CSA Arms Factory to Kenansville, North Carolina after a yellow epidemic struck Wilmington in 1862.  The factory produced numerous swords, utensils, and sabers for the Confederacy.

In the fall of 1862, the company started operations and supplied necessary arms for the Confederate States Army.  During the American Civil War, the company produced various products: eighteen surgical sets, 3,700 lance spears, 6,500 saber bayonets, 11,700 cavalry sabers, 2,700 officer’s sabers, 600 naval cutlasses, 800 artillery cutlasses, 300 saber belts, and 300 knapsacks. Featured is one of Louis Frolich’s finest example patterns, the rarely encountered “Staff & Field Officers” sword. The sword total length is 38 inches, with blade length 32 inches. Sword “counterguard” marked Roman numeral II (2) with brass scabbard throat marked Roman numeral II (2) indicating scabbard and sword original match thereof.  The scabbard retains much of its original red lacquer paint, much more so than normally encountered. CSA counterguard fully intact and original with no play whatsoever, with accompanying grip complete with original leather grip remaining, held in place by 13 turns of copper wire. One of the most iconic of all Confederate Staff & Field Officers Swords, surviving in a wonderful state of original preservation.
