The Palmetto state of South Carolina awarded Benjamin Flagg and Willaim Glaze, owner of the Palmetto Armory of Columbia S.C., signed a large manufacturing contract for Muskets, Rifles, Pistols and Cavalry sabres with scabbards, on April 15th, 1851. It is believed Cavalry sabres were actually manufactured in Germany by Schnitzler and Kirschbaum and imported by Glaze. Palmetto Armory imported swords were identical to the U.S. Model 1840 Cavalry sabre and were manufactured at a high level of quality, bearing the name “Columbia S.C.” stamped on reverse ricasso. Stamping flaws on this sword indicate, the armory die was heavily worn at time of manufacture. This Palmetto Armory Imported Cavalry Sabre is in a near new state of preservation.
