Invented by Dr. Jean Alexander Francois LeMat….. the LeMat “Grapeshot” Revolver was quite the innovation, incorporating exceptional fire power, a 9-shot cylinder with 6- 3/4 (.42 Caliber) octagonal barrel. Cylinder rotated around 5″ (caliber).63 shotgun barrel, which served as cylinder arbor. With a flick of the hammer (lever) user could utilize .42 caliber or single .63 caliber shotgun barrel. (Shot or Slug). Serial numbers on the cylinder, barrel, frame #179 should suggest early British model before starting renumbering with higher digits. Both barrels are Birmingham proof marked, B, C, P and mark with V, not London or Belgium. Unmarked top flat barrel, this example has typical second model LeMat features, Full octagonal barrel, Left-side loading lever, Round trigger guard with out spur, Knob-style frame assembly latch, Fixed symmetrical butt ring, Central pivot on trigger for one-handed operation, Long pattern main spring. In my opinion, with the evidence of well worn grips, suggesting apparent noteworthy field service. Quite the anomaly indeed !
