Originating in Louisiana, came one of the largest known edged weapons from the Confederacy. This Hugh Confederate Bowie knife sports an overall length of 27.5 inches, with blade length of 22 inches. The size of this weapon can only be appreciated in person, with one provided image taken beside an average side knife for comparison. The grip is of turned locust wood or chestnut, with 2 1/4-inch iron ferrule. Guard is iron with 3-inch quillon. Scabbard is zinc with missing attachment belt loop. The quality of manufacture is excellent in both knife and scabbard. The sweep style blade “to the point” is typical of Louisiana blades. Although the origin of manufacturer is unknown, this extant example was manufactured to last the duration. A very impressive Confederate side arm.
