In the beginning of the Civil War, William J. McElroy had formerly operated a Tin Smithery. McElroy changed occupations and began a sword manufacturing operation throughout the war. W. J. McElroy is best known for their beautiful etched blades and fine workmanship. Production included a wide variety of products, including bayonet, bowie knives and many types of swords and sabres.
