Exceptionally rare Staff & Field Officers sword manufactured by Blaise Douglas of Columbia, South Carolina. This sword is considered "one-of-four known" examples from this maker, which is patterned in similar manufacturing characteristics as Louis Froelich of the "Confederate States Armory in Kenansville, North Carolina. The overall length is 37.25 inches, with blade length of 31.75. The scabbard is original as manufactured by B. Douglas, sheet iron body-lap seamed, soldered brass rings and throat. Brass drag has distinct rondelles at each terminus, being unique to this manufacturer. Pierced letters CSA incorporate into guard, which is cast, not "cut-out". This example is very similar to that of Froelich manufactured swords of same pattern with minor differences, most notably, no pierced slot above the letter "C", taller ferrule and no Froelich ever-dyed grips, to match branch of service. Grips of black dyed leather and twisted wire on grip wrap. This rare sword is in amazingly fine condition, with the addition of being "bullet or grape shot" struck at scabbard area, creating a 1/2 inch gash, which does not affect the insertion of the blade into scabbard. With the exception of being "tastefully projectile struck" this example is in a state of "exceptional original" preservation.   Provenance: Steve & Patricia Mullinax Collection.

This rare example Confederate Naval Officers sword was designed for the C.S. Navy by Commander George T. Sinclair, once captain of the ironclad CSS Atlanta (converted from the blockade-runner Fingal) and one of the Navy's purchasing agents in England beginning in 1862. Only a few hundred of these rare Confederate swords were manufactured, making surviving examples extremely rare. These examples were embellished with traditional naval motifs, including the head of a mythical sea serpent at the pommel, intertwined serpents on the drag of the leather scabbard, and coils of ropes for the ring bands. Cast into the guard is a fouled anchor over crossed cannon., the insignia of the C.S.Navy, on either side of which are tobacco leaves and cotton plants, symbolizing the commercial wealth of the South. The blades were etched with the same symbols as well as a Confederate first national-pattern flag. This example was manufactured by Robert Mole and Son, the high-quality cutlery makers in Birmingham, but marked for retail sale with the stamp of Courtney, Tenant, and Company of Charleston, South Carolina. William C. Courtney lived in London for most of the war while his company served as the Confederate Navy's commission house in England, not unlike Sinclair, Hamilton, and Company for the army. This is an exceptional condition Courtney, Tennent, and Company Naval Officers Sword by retailer in Charleston, South Carolina.

Confederate Government Sharps Carbine

After decades of sectional discontent, the Southern Confederacy braced itself for war. Following the election of Abraham Lincoln, South Carolina seceded from the Union, following by ten more states. On April 17th 1861 Virginia became the eight state to secede and join the Confederacy and Richmond became its Capital. In December of 1862 the Confederate government entered into a contract with the S.C. Robinson Arms Manufactory, to purchase all the breech loading carbines of the sharps pattern that the firm could produce. During early 1863, the factory was taken over by the Confederate Ordnance Department. It is thought that about 3500 carbines were thus manufactured through the spring of 1864. This featured example is one of the Confederate Government manufactured examples, surviving in remarkable original condition. This example CS Government manufactured Carbine is original in all regards, with its original "breech block"still intact. Due to hard field usage, many CS Sharps breech blocks had been replaced with Federal Sharps breech blocks. This is an outstanding example and worthy of the finest arms collection.  Serial number 2785

Nicknamed, "The Grapeshot Revolver," the LeMat pistol was invented by a medical physician of French descent, who resided in New Orleans. His name was Jean Alexandre Francois LeMat. This massive handgun, the most intriguing arm of the Civil War period, as manufactured in Paris, France and ran through the Union blockade to the Confederate Government. The LeMat's firepower made it the favorite weapon of Jeb Stuart and any Confederate cavalryman fortunate enough to obtain one. It was the weapon of choice also for General Beauegard, Major Henry Witz, General Braxton Bragg and many other high ranking Confederate Officers. This gun fires nine shots of .42 calibre ammunition, while the arbor, upon which the cylinder turns is itself a shotgun barrel, firing a 20 gauge load! There were approximately 2500 LeMat pistols manufactured for the Confederacy, not all of which were delivered. There were two distinct models of the LeMat pistol, and a variant model referred to as a "transitional" model. First model serial numbers ranged from 1 to about 450. They had right side loading levers, spur trigger guards, part-octagon-partround barrels, full swivel lanyard rings in the lower grip, and a few other defining features. Second Models have full octagon barrels, left side loading levers, round trigger guards, fixed butt-rings for lanyards, and some other small defining features. Second model serial numbers range from 950 to 2500. Transitional models are found serially numbered from about 450-950. Thus we come to the examination the First Model Transitional LeMat 579. LeMat 579 has been found to be 100% original in all respects, with all original parts of the gun., which is exceptional for pieces in this serial number range. Part-by part examination reveals the following: All matching serial number parts, Cylinder, Barrel, Frame Locking Lever, Grapeshot Barrel Arbor, Frame, Hammer, Ratchet Arm, Side Plate and Spur Trigger Guard. This example has a "third series" barrel markings (Col. LeMat Bte SGDG PARIS), the "Bte." is French for "patent" and the S.G.D.G. is the abbreviation for "sans grantie du government" translated in English, "patented but without guarantee if the Government." Inspected by CSN Inspector Lt. William H. Murdaugh. Serial  number 579 and properly stamped with the Star over LM marking on the right side of the barrel. Conclusion: First Model Transitional LeMat 579 is an excellent, original example, boasting all original parts and screws. Additionally this First Model Transitional LeMat survives in an astounding state of almost new preservation. LeMat 579 additionally is "one of three" known engraved examples. This example is one of the finest condition "First Model Transitional LeMats I have personally ever observed and a true treasure.

An exceptional and important example of a rare  "Thomas Griswold & Company of New Orleans" Cavalry Officer Saber identified to Captain George Pettigrew Bryan of the 2nd North Carolina Cavalry. Captain George Pettigrew Bryan's official Military records indicate that Bryan enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd North Carolina Cavalry (19th State Troops) on September 30, 1861. During his service with the 2nd NC Cavalry, Bryan would be promoted to Lieutenant on July 1, 1862, rising to the rank of Captain on July 14th 1863. Bryan was wounded and captured in action, while engaged with Union troops at Upperville, Virginia. As a prisoner of war, Bryan would be exchanged at Point Lookout, Maryland and again returning to Confederate service. On August 16th 1864, Bryan would be killed in action while engaged with Union troops and would would be placed on the North Carolina  "Roll of Honor" for this service during the American Civil War. Bryans middle name was "Pettigrew" being related to North Carolina's "General James Johnson Pettigrew," Pettigrew was promoted to brigadier general by President Jefferson Davis. Bryan's sister was married to General Bryan Grimes (4th North Carolina Infantry Regiment, who fought in nearly all of the major battles of the Eastern Theater of the war). Provenance: This exceptional conditional Cavalry Officers Saber was obtained from a direct descendant of Captain Bryan in 1992 (on his mothers side) at the Carolina Antique Gun Show, Raleigh, North Carolina. Sword Manufacture History:  In August 1861, the partnership of Hyde & Goodrich was dissolved by the the withdrawal of A. L. Hyde and the firm continued as Thomas, Griswold  & Co. at the corner of Canal and Royal Streets, New Orleans. Thomas Griswold & Company manufactured and sold many types of war supplies, but are mainly known for their wide variety of Swords, Sabres and Cutlasses. Shortly after 1861, Thomas Griswold printed a "Lancers Manual" advertising on the back page, of which was devoted to advertising that Thomas Griswold & Co. were "Importers of Guns, Pistols, Bowie-Knives, Caps and Cartridges and Enfield Rifles. Manufactures Cavalry and Artillery Sabres and Field Officers Swords and Lances."  It is considered "Thomas Griswold of New Orleans" manufactured some of the finest quality swords for the South. Featured here, is one such example, with firm address clearly stamped : THOMAS GRISWOLD & Co. over NEW-ORLEANS. This sword survives in a "exceptional perfect state" of original preservation with original "Officers Knot" still present. This saber is one of the finest condition "identified" Cavalry Officers Sabers known to exist. It is a magnificent example of a pure Confederate battle weapon, whose original owners name resides on the North Carolina Civil War "Roll of Honor".

Second Model serial numbers ranges from 950 to 2500. Transitional Models, then are found  serially numbered from about 450 to 950, making them the rarer and perhaps more interesting of the examples, because they present an admixture of the different features of both the First and the Second Models. Thus, Transitional Models may differ in many respects from one another, depending on which parts are used from the other two models to fabricate any given piece. Thus we come to the examination of the Transitional Model #579.LeMat #579 has been found to be 100% original in all respects, with all original parts of the gun, which is exceptional for pieces in this serial number range. Hand guard CS Ordnance stamped with four X cross-hatches to scabbard assembly marks. Scabbard throat and drag riveted to leather scabbard. There are very few known surviving examples with or without their accompanying scabbards. At the onset of the Civil war various temporary Ordnance works grew up out of existing foundries, machine shops, railroad repair shops the few U.S. Arsenal and Ordnance depots. The main of these in the early part of the war were Richmond, Virginia, Fayetteville, N.C., Charleston, S.C., Augusta, G.A., Savannah & Macon, G.A., Nashville and Memphis, Tenn, Mt. Vernon and Montgomery, Ala, New Orleans & Baton Rouge, La, Little Rock, Ark, and San Antonio and Houston, Texas. Others were added such as Columbia, S.C. Atlanta & Columbus Ga, Selma, Alabama and Jackson, Mississippi. Of these latter places Atlanta and Selma became the most important. It is the my belief this CS Artillery Short sword was produced at the Mobile Armory, in Alabama. As war began, Military fervor in Mobile was high, with many responding to recruitment drives for service in the Confederate Army. The Creole Guard and the Southern Guard were among those new troops that manned Mobile's defenses, as did the Mobile Cadats. The Pelham Cadets "1st Battalion Alabama Cadets served at Mobile and in various parts of Alabama in 1864 & 1865. The C.S.S. Hunley, the first submarine to sink an enemy vessel in combat, was built and tested in Mobile before  being shipped to Charleston, South Carolina. Brierfield Iron works and Tannehill Iron works were additional CS Government furnaces purchased from the Bib County Iron Company in 1863. The Tallassee Confederate Armory, was an 1844 cotton mill in Tallassee, utilized by the Confederacy. When the Confederacy feared for the security of Richmond, VA. a decesion was made to relocate Richmond Carbine production to an 1844 cotton mill in Tallassee. The Tallassee CS Armory is additionally known as one of the only Confederate Armories to survive the Civil War.

A wonderful example Harpers Ferry Rifle musket that was the proven "staple arm" of the Civil War, and being the first U.S. martial arm firing the mini bullet in 58 caliber. Many early production Harpers Ferry Rifle Muskets were utilized by the Confederacy in large numbers. In the reference " C.S. Armory Richmond by Paul J. Davies on page 6, is this mention of interest to the Confederate arms collector. October 1861, The capture of the Model 1855 rifle and rifle musket machinery at Harper's Ferry  by the Jefferson Battalion and the Fauquier Cavalry under Captain Turner Ashby  on the 18th of April 1861 supplied Virginia with one of the largest and most modern sets of armory machinery in the world. The Richmond Model 1855 Rifle Musket known as the Richmond Rifle Musket thus started its life in mid September 1861 from these Harpers Ferry Rifle and Rifle Musket arms and parts. The most notable change to the Richmond Rifle Musket, from the U.S. Model 1855 Rifle musket was "the elimination of the Maynard Tape Primer apparatus from the lock.Reference page 9 of the reference "C.S.
